Smells and perfume during pregnancy, a big mess

The sense of smell is one of the first senses to develop in utero. Between the 8th and 11th week, the baby begins to perceive the smells around him. As for the future mother, she sees her olfaction multiplied during the first weeks, under the effect of hormones. Estrogens indeed cause great sensitivity to smells, making them stronger and even, for some of them, sickening and a source of nausea. If this phenomenon subsides as you approach the second trimester of pregnancy, it requires some adjustments, especially on the vanity side. And this is how the usual cosmetics are replaced by odorless versions (and without controversial substances for the fetus, such as retinol, vitamin A, AHAs, alcohol...). However, this almost natural abandonment of the usual products may not be undertaken by the luckiest, those whose sense of smell is not impacted by furious hormones. This is why vigilance is required. As soon as your pregnancy begins, new habits must be adopted. And if many of them come under the precautionary principle, don't forget: prevention is better than cure!

The pregnant perfume, distrust...

Sometimes the enemy hides where you least expect him. In a perfume bottle for example. What is wrong with a fragrance during pregnancy? Its composition which, as part of a traditional juice, contains alcohol, synthetic ingredients, others from petrochemicals and, potentially, essential oils. Elements to avoid when you are pregnant, because of their irritant, allergic and/or endocrine disrupting potential.

Using an organic perfume poses the same problem since it also contains alcohol (not denatured this one) and essential oils. Although some are authorized during pregnancy and there is little risk that they cross the skin and impact the fetus, the precautionary principle is once again essential.

Wearing perfume while pregnant and exposing yourself to the sun: FBI

You will forgive us for this acronym, but wearing perfume while pregnant in the sun is clearly a False Good Idea. During pregnancy, the skin is more sensitive. Spots can quickly appear when exposed to the sun (the famous pregnancy mask). However, if you perfume yourself with a fragrance containing alcohol (which is undesirable, as we have seen) and you go and expose yourself in the process, you risk an additional pigmentary reaction.

If you want to wear perfume while you are pregnant

Can't imagine the next few months without a delicious trail? You can wear perfume as long as you don't apply it directly to your skin. No more veils of perfume on the points of impulse of the body, namely the wrists, the salt shakers of the neck or the neckline. From now on, it is on your clothes that you can diffuse your perfume. Good news though: it will be noticeable longer!

After giving birth

If you continue to wear perfume while pregnant, do not change your reference after giving birth. Your smell is a very important sensory cue for your baby, so there is no question of disturbing him with a new one.
