Should we worry about vaccination from the 1st quarter?

The recommendation of vaccination in the first trimester raised many concerns.

Vaccination was not recommended to women from the start of pregnancy because, according to the precautionary principle, they were not included in clinical trials. There was therefore a lack of data on the subject.

RNA vaccines "do not cause a high risk of infertility, miscarriage in the first and second quarter or congenital anomalies", underlines the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

The vaccination recommended in the 2nd quarter was also linked to "the fear of a social network effect", explains to Actu.fr, Olivier Picone, gynecologist-obstetrician at the Louis-Mourier de Colombes hospital and member of the National College of Gynecologists-Obstetricians.

Indeed, it is during the first trimester that the risk of miscarriage intervenes mainly and "the link between miscarriage and vaccine can be quickly associated".

What are the complications related to vaccination?

Moderate side effects could be observed after injection, such as headaches, fatigue or muscle pain. These symptoms are also similar to women who are not pregnant, according to the centers for the control and prevention of diseases (CDC).

We also have "no more perspective on the effects of vaccination", explains the gynecologist.

Numerous studies have notably been published in the United States or in Israel.

One of them, published by the New England Journal of Medicine last April, was based on a sample of 35,000 women.Result: complications of pregnancy such as prematurity and false layers are not more represented in vaccinated women.

They also have an immune response equivalent to non-high vaccinated women. The rate of generated antibodies is thus similar.

Is there a risk of transmission of the mother's virus to the baby?

"Pregnant women are more likely to contract serious forms of the covid and therefore to be put under oxygen, intubated," explains the gynecologist. The risk also increases for patients with comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes or hypertension.

The risk of a premature birth is not excluded either if the mother is positive to the COVID.

The transmission of the mother's virus to the fetus is exceptional.Contamination generally takes place during or after childbirth."You have to be afraid of the virus, not vaccination," concludes the doctor.
