Practical advice for running in fall run in fall

When people ask me what is my favorite season to run, I answer without any hesitation that it is autumn. In my opinion, there is no better time to go out and stretch your legs. The weather is cool, the smells varied and the landscape is dressed in its most beautiful finery. The simple colored leaves paint pictures worthy of great masters.Practical tips for running in the fall Running in the fall Practical tips for running in the fall Running in the fall

It is true, I concede, that for many the memories of fall races rhyme with cold, wind, rain and darkness. I don't even try to deny it. It is true that Mother Nature often refuses to collaborate in October and November. And I'm not talking about the beginning of December!

Since nothing can be changed, it is up to us, the runners, to adapt to these conditions. With the right clothes and a few basic rules of conduct, anyone can enjoy running in the fall. If this can motivate you, tell yourself that it pays off since the body spends a lot of energy to warm up and burns more calories than in hot weather.

The best advice I can give you for having fun running outside in the fall is to choose your clothes wisely. It is not always easy to do this since during the same outing the temperature can be changing.

Clothing should breathe, insulate and protect. Above all, do not dress in cotton clothes. This is to be avoided since this natural fiber absorbs moisture too easily, so that the clothes become heavy, uncomfortable and will give you a serious cold if the wind picks up. Opt instead for textiles using synthetic fibers that repel perspiration.

The best thing is to opt for a layered system of clothing so as to create an airy zone of natural insulation. However, the outer layer should let perspiration through but block wind or rain. All of these are easily found in running shops.

Finally, be careful not to dress too much. It's normal to be a little cold at the start of a run, but you'll warm up quickly after a few minutes of running.

It is through the extremities that the heat of the body is lost. Keeping your head and hands covered is a good idea. If you only have a toque or wool or leather gloves, I again advise you to go for a walk in a running shop. You are due for a change. A small investment you won't regret.

You have to do everything to keep your feet dry and warm, because if the socks are damp or downright wet, the skin of the feet becomes fragile and blisters follow soon after. It goes without saying that the cold then penetrates more easily. It is therefore essential to wear shoes with a waterproof and breathable membrane, such as Gore-Tex. A good pair of waterproof wool socks will complete the set.

Don't forget to be visible because the sun is shining less and less! It is not yet in the sky for the morning runner or is already in bed for those who prefer to jog on their way home from work.

The running clothes you wear as well as the shoes already have reflective strips. But to increase your safety, choose pale clothes and do not hesitate to add illuminated bracelets to your arms or wear a headlamp.

Choosing lighted streets is definitely better than a bike path or the dark path that winds through the park not far from your home! And if you can run with people who share your passion (and your schedule) it's still better!

Finally, a quick word on the autumn wind. When it is blowing hard and cold, it can quickly lower your body temperature. The best thing to do is to not challenge him at the end of the course when you are sweaty. If possible, plan an out-and-back route and always go into the wind. This way, when you retrace your steps in the middle of the course, the wind won't chill you while you're sweating profusely. This will save you from an unpleasant cold snap.

Running in autumn must be pleasant, even if the climate in our part of the country is difficult to predict. Armed with these tips, you should enjoy jogging outdoors.

And then tell yourself that running in the cool weather will gradually prepare you to do the same thing in the cold of winter. I'll tell you about it. For now, enjoy this magnificent festival of colors.

Good fall shopping.
