Designed for mountaineering, the Mammut Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket provides warmth and comfort in all conditions, even the most difficult. To verify this, I went to Finland in the Hossa National Park, in the heart of winter with particularly extreme temperatures.Mammut Eigerjoch Pro down jacket testMammut Eigerjoch Pro down jacket test

First impressions

When I discovered the Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket from Mammut, I was impressed by its volume. How can such a small compression pouch hold a jacket that inflates so much? The feeling of warmth is immediate, and you quickly understand that the jacket has a fill power of 850 cuin.

When you look at the labels, you realize that the down jacket is a concentrate of technologies and new patents. Are they as effective in the field? Is this down jacket more resistant than the others? Can we compare it with the Millet Ld Kamet down jacket that I tested recently? To have…

Review of the Mammut Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket

I went to Finnish Lapland for 15 days to do dog sledding and snowshoeing in January. The temperatures were between -20 and -35°C, with a rather dry climate. I used the down jacket a lot during water dog rides, when crossing large frozen lakes and letting yourself be carried away. When snowshoeing, I wore it more during meal breaks, because I got hot very quickly with it during exercise.

The Mammut Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket is available in red or black. I tested it in red. I find this color very pretty, but a bit messy. On the other hand, we are very visible in the mountains and can be spotted by the emergency services if necessary, which is not insignificant in the practice of mountaineering or the mountains in winter. The black jacket has the same advantage because the inside is orange.

As for the cut, the down jacket is very well fitted. We don't look like Madame bibendum even though she is quite massive. You can easily wear it in the resort for hanging out in the evening. Besides, I used it a lot in Chamonix when I returned from Finland. It can be tightened at the waist to prevent the infiltration of fresh air. There are drawstrings on both sides, so it's an optimal fit. They are located lower than the waist strap of the backpack, so there is no hindrance.

Thermicity / breathability

Mammut Eigerjoch Pro down jacket test

My expectation of down jackets is for them to be warm. Especially the Mammut Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded, which has a 90/10 120 g water-repellent goose down padding ensuring a fill power of 850 cuin. This means that the fill power is among the best on the market and that the feathers and goose down provide a lot of warmth. On the pitch, I can only approve. On my sled, by -35°C without moving, I was not cold. There is no thermal bridge, no heat loss anywhere. The double compartment design avoids crossing seams and therefore colder zones. The zip goes up particularly high, just under the nose. I had no discomfort because the closure is protected by a small cap which prevents chafing. There is also an insulating discount to avoid thermal bridges. The hood takes the forehead well, is very thick and warm and has a small visor with a net. I did not understand the usefulness of the net, but it is not disturbing. The hood can be adjusted by tightening two cords at the neck. Their positioning is practical, you can adjust everything with gloves, on the ground, without problem. On the other hand, the tightening is not optimal and I had the impression that the hood loosened as the day went on. She is tall enough, we have good peripheral vision and we can easily turn our heads. On the other hand, hat and buff obligatory below, because there is air which passes at the level of the cheekbones. You can use the hood with a helmet, but I haven't checked.

WINTER SALE!

There are excellent opportunities to get bargains or even very good bargains during this sales period (January 12 to February 8, 2022). In order not to give in to the unreasonable temptations of the sales, here are some rules to follow to buy responsibly:

Here are some offers from our partners:

As for the heat, it's absolutely insane. The down jacket is a real little sauna, we really appreciate wearing it during breaks or when we are less active. Once again, I was not at all cold on my sled by -35°C, while I was not moving. All promises are kept!

Water repellency / resistance

The Mammut Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket is equipped with Pertex® Quantum Pro and Diamond Fuse technology which adds an ultra-thin water-repellent layer and makes the jacket resistant to abrasion. In the field the jacket is relatively water resistant, it is not impervious to heavy rain but it does not get wet so easily. In Finland, I was able to be in the snow all day without getting wet at the end of the day. Regarding the resistance, I did not damage the down jacket even though I wore it a lot. Dogs can jump on you, you can walk in the forest, it is resistant. On the other hand, be careful with crampons and ice axes!

Compressibility / weight

The Mammut Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket comes with a compression pouch with a loop for clipping a carabiner. It compresses very well, and does not take up much space compared to the heat supply. When weighed, the down jacket weighs 748 grams for a size M. The Mammut site announces 780 grams without announcing a size. It's light for as much heat.

Freedom of movement and small design details

There are certain details that do not lie about the quality of manufacture and design. We can easily lift our arms without the lower abdomen being uncovered, we can move in all directions without our movements being obstructed. A real joy of freedom and comfort.

There is a small sleeve where you can slide your thumb to keep your hand warm if you are not wearing a glove. Very pleasant thing, the sleeve holds well in place because there is the necessary space to slip the glove under the sleeve (in the case of small gloves) and on the sleeve for large mittens. Result our thumb is not torn, the sleeve is well positioned and the heat supply is maximum.

As for the pockets, there are many and they are well located: two large front pockets to slip our hands into, one on the chest to slip the phone into, a zipped pocket inside to put the papers identities and finally two large nets inside to slip our gloves and not risk losing them.

My opinion

I love the Eigerjoch Pro IN Hooded down jacket from Mammut. It is perfect, warm, comfortable. Only small downside, the price is very high, but we have a real quality product. It was absolutely ideal for my stay in Finnish Lapland in winter, with extreme temperatures and conditions. To try it is to adopt it.
